A 30-day journey on foot, by camel and 4x4 through the Sultanate of Oman

Inspiring the next generation to understand the importance of biodiversity, sustainability and Oman’s rich natural and cultural heritage is a key aim of Jewel of Arabia. To do this we have partnered with two internationally respected institutions to create a series of learning opportunities, in both English, and in Arabic.

Tahadi Mustadam!

Tahadi Mustadam!

A digital challenge designed by the British Council.

The British Council is proud to support the Jewel of Arabia initiative through Tahadi Mustadam (Sustainability Challenge). Through Tahadi Mustadam, British Council will engage Omani youth across the country via hackathons to reflect on the themes of Jewel of Arabia such as sustainability, biodiversity and climate change. Participants will be supported in creating social action projects which reflect these themes in Oman, their future impact on the country and ways in which we can all contribute to a better future.

Following these series of hackathons planned concurrently with the Jewel of Arabia expedition, Tahadi Mustadam will conclude with a presentation to the best judged team at The Oman Sustainability Week in May 2025.

Details of how to get involved will appear here soon.

Inspiring Resources

Inspiring Resources for Geography Teachers

created by The Royal Geographical Society

The Royal Geographical Society was founded in 1830 to advance geographical science, and this remains our core purpose.

The Society is proud to be producing a range of resources to accompany the 30-day Jewel of Arabia expedition, as the team pass through or close to many of Oman’s biodiversity hotspots. We will bring you a new collection of interactive resources that explore the captivating landscapes and people of Oman, with a further focus on drawing comparisons with the UK.

The ‘Ask the Geographer’ podcast series will feature podcasts with the Expedition Leader, Mark Evans MBE FRGS – offering his reflections and insights before and after the expedition.

Using a StoryMap™, you can follow the team’s journey, compare images between the original expedition in 1928 and the latest one, and discover a range of fieldwork ideas. You will also be able to listen to podcasts, watch video clips and access other resources to help bring this fascinating country to life in your classrooms.

There will be resources for both Primary and Secondary teachers and students – including a Dryland Landscapes Case Study for use at A Level and fieldwork insights. We will be working closely with The British School and Knowledge Gate International schools in Muscat, keeping in contact more widely with other schools in the Middle East. The resources will be available to all, with a focus on making them relevant to International Middle Eastern and UK schools.

The materials we create will be updated during the expedition and beyond, and accessible at http://www.rgs.org/joa

British Omani Society

Inspiring Friendship

The British Omani Society (BOS) is a charitable organisation working with the objective of enhancing and preserving the longstanding friendship between Britain and Oman. The Society was formed in January 1976 with the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said as the Society’s founding Patron. Our Patron is now HM Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said and HE The Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman in London is our President. Our charitable object is to advance the education of the British and Omani public about each other’s people, history, geography, economy, literature, art, music, antiquities, languages, cultures, religions, beliefs, customs, industry and commerce. We do this by arranging lectures, seminars and meetings, which may be open to the public; and by assisting individuals and organisations by providing bursaries, awards, scholarships, training, apprenticeships and financial and logistical support.
