With mountains that reach to 10,000ft, a rich natural beauty with a well-preserved cultural heritage, Oman occupies the south-eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, where it has long been an important gateway for trade between Africa and Asia; it has been the home of expedition leader Mark Evans for 18 years.
From Ibn Battuta and Wilfred Thesiger, from Bertram Thomas to Harry St John Philby Oman has attracted many desert explorers and is also a land of ancient seafarers, home to the legendary Sinbad, all of whom enjoyed its legendary hospitality and warmth. Oman was a cultural center and established an extended bridge with many ancient civilizations, and it still maintains strong relationships with other countries. A compelling blend of the old and the new, its impeccably maintained capital, Muscat combines traditional Arabic and Islamic styles with ancient fortifications and architectural treasures that sets it apart from many other oil-rich modern cities in the Middle East. In a region of turmoil, Oman is haven of peace, tranquillity and stability.
Slightly larger than the UK, but with a population of less than 5 million Oman has wilderness in abundance. Today it has a national strategy called Vision 2040, a key element of which sees a move towards decarbonising the economy and becoming a global green energy hub through being a leader in the development of green hydrogen. Thanks to a combination of rugged mountains, beautiful coastline, spectacular desert and monsoon fed frankincense groves it is also home to a rich biodiversity. Oman is the last stronghold of the arabian leopard, home to the world’s largest population of loggerhead turtles and the endangered green turtle and the only non-migratory population of humpback whales. In Barr Al Hikman Oman has what is considered the most significant wintering wetland areas in the Middle East that sees up to 500,000 birds depend upon it.
Through podcasts, social media and other channels we will be sharing the stories of these amazing places, and the inspiring young Omani’s working hard to shape a sustainable future for this incredible country.
